He thought of other things, broken trails of thought long since overgrown with doubt? A face in the crowd, another face forgotten? What was it he was doing, what is it that he was thinking about? And then, the crowd below, snapped him back into the task at hand! He was at the top of the Big Top, and the people on his left and on his right all gaped up at him? Concentrate, he thought to himself, you must think only about the wire!
With this, he readied his chair, and went about doing the trick that had made him famous! He went about his act now, high above the crowd below, and he performed it perfectly! When he was done, he made his way to the other side, and bowed mechanically to the cheering crowds below!
But safe now on the platform, his mind was far from all of this? He thought again, trying to remember what it was that he had been thinking about, when he had lost his concentration out there on the wire?
